Snow Closures: Two-Hour Delays

As everyone knows, this has been an extremely harsh winter, which has played havoc with school schedules. As of today (1-24-17), Pilot Rock schools have been closed five days this winter due to inclement weather. Fortunately, the District has enough days scheduled that no make-up days are required at this time as the District is still above the required minimum number of instructional hours as dictated by state law.

Until now, Pilot Rock School District has not employed a two-hour delay schedule for inclement weather. This has been done in the past and, for a variety of reasons, it did not work well. However, because of the nature of this winter and the number of instructional hours we have already lost, we will once again implement the possibility of a two-hour school delay.

Should a two-hour delay be called, please have your students arrive at school or their bus stop exactly two hours later than normal. For example, if your student is typically picked up at their bus stop at 6:30, they would be picked up at 8:30 on a two-hour delay. On these days, school buildings would open exactly two hours later than normal. On two-hour delays, no breakfast will be served at the school.

Please also understand that there may be times when a two-hour delay is called initially, but may be changed to a full closure if conditions allow. It is our goal to have school open as much as possible, but only if it is safe to do so. Our number one responsibility is student safety and we will always make that our top priority.

Public Invited to ODE Feedback Session -- POSTPONED due to weather

School district administrators and staff, students, parents and community members from across eastern Oregon are invited to attend a community feedback session about education in Oregon on Wednesday, January 18 at 6:30 PM at Washington Elementary School in Pendleton, located at 1205 SE Byers Avenue. The event is FREE and open to the public.

Information for Parents about School Delays/ Closures

With the arrival of winter weather, we would like to remind parents/families about our district policy. If school is delayed or closed, the information is posted by 6:00 AM on:

  • District Website
  • Automated calling system
  • Regional media outlets (newspaper online, radio, Portland & Tri-Cities tv stations)

If no notice is posted, school is running on regular schedule.

The location with the most accurate information to confirm a delay/closure is on the district website. On occasion, media inaccurately reports school delay/closure information.

If schools must close early, notification is given using the same method. If you have questions about the delay/closure policy, please call the District Office or your child’s school.

Thank you.
